Our team tested both the Casper Snow Hybrid and Casper Snow Max, finding them to be excellent options for hot sleepers. The Snow Hybrid offers balanced comfort for back and side sleepers across body weights, while the Snow Max ups the plushness and pressure relief, making it ideal for side sleepers.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Casper Snow Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.
Jackson Lindeke
Executive Product Director
Side sleeper
180 lbs.
Showers before bed
Both the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max did a stellar job of relieving pressure around my hips and shoulders while lying on my side. That made these mattresses quite comfortable for me.
Logan Foley
Editorial Director
Side sleeper
140 lbs.
Has too many dogs in the bed
Like Jackson, I liked the cushioning for my joints, and I was also a big fan of how well the memory foam layers isolated motion so that I wasn’t bothered by movement on the other side of the bed.
Jeremy Klein
Senior Product Testing Manager
Side sleeper
160 lbs.
Nightly melatonin user
I agree with everything that Jackson and Logan said, but I would offer a word of caution to sleepers over 230 pounds. I thought the hug of this mattress was very significant, and it might be too much for people with a higher body weight.

Side Sleepers
Overall, the Casper Snow Hybrid offered consistent performance for the side sleepers on our team. It was especially comfortable for those weighing 230 pounds or less with just the right balance of spinal support and pressure relief. Side sleepers can develop pressure points beneath their hips and shoulders, but that wasn’t an issue on the Snow Hybrid or Snow Max.
That said, side sleepers over 230 felt that the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max were both a bit too plush to provide optimal support.
Back Sleepers
In our testing, the Snow Hybrid got quality ratings from back sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. For them, the Snow Hybrid’s medium (5) firmness and excellent pressure relief offered comfort for the lower back, but the mattress stayed even enough to avoid bothersome sinkage.
In contrast, back sleepers over 230 pounds generally said this mattress was too soft to deliver sufficient support. Because of its even plusher feel, the Snow Max received slightly lower scores from back sleepers of all body weights compared to the Snow Hybrid.
Stomach Sleepers
Our test results showed that the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max have limited appeal to stomach sleepers. Those under 130 pounds described the support from these mattresses as adequate, but they still said they would prefer a firmer mattress.
A mattress with more pushback is beneficial for stomach sleepers because it helps keep their spine in an even, neutral plane. With a softer mattress, the midsection can sink down and pull the body into a U-shape.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
8.5
/ 10
Snow: 8 / 10
Snow Max: 9 / 10
“Both the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max were great at limiting vibrations from movement, so there’s only a minimal risk of sleep disturbances from motion on the other side of the bed.” – Logan
The Snow Hybrid does an excellent job preventing motion transfer. The pocketed coil support core is responsive and provides some bounce, but the memory foam comfort system absorbs that movement and keeps it from moving across the bed’s surface.
The Snow Max has an extra layer of memory foam, allowing it perform even better in this category. Overall, these mattresses are a solid choice for couples and people who have a pet or small child who frequently shares the bed with them.
Pressure Relief
8
/ 10
“The mattress felt like it was gently hugging my hips and shoulders, ensuring that there was no painful impact or pressure buildup.” – Jackson
Our testing found that the Snow Hybrid’s zoned support, responsive coils, and memory foam combined to provide above-average pressure relief.
In particular, the memory foam layers contour to the body, providing targeted support to the hot spots that need it most.
Although the Snow Hybrid didn’t achieve a perfect score for pressure relief, most sleepers will find it comfortable and supportive. Those who want extra contouring should consider the Snow Max, which has an additional layer of memory foam.
Temperature Control
8
/ 10
Snow: 8 / 10
Snow Max: 8.5 / 10
“I was fully expecting to overheat on this mattress, but that wasn’t the case at all. I was able to sleep for hours at a cool temperature.” – Jeremy
It’s tough to make a mattress that hugs your body without absorbing significant body heat, but the Snow Hybrid manages to rise to the occasion. This model has multiple foam layers but prevents substantial heat retention by layering the foam atop an airy pocketed coil support core and incorporating proprietary cooling technology.
The Snow Hybrid’s memory foam layer includes phase change material and patented HeatDelete graphite bands, both of which are designed to draw warmth away from your body.
Our testing team found that this model regulates temperature well enough to be a worthwhile choice for all but the hottest sleepers.
Although the Snow Max contains more foam and should, at least in theory, sleep warmer than the Snow Hybrid, we found this isn’t the case. In fact, the third foam layer’s airflow channels do a good job of promoting circulation throughout the comfort system.
Edge Support
6
/ 10
Snow: 6.5 / 10
Snow Max: 5.5 / 10
“Edge support on this mattress isn’t terrible, but it’s also far from a selling point. The softer edge didn’t bother me that much, but it might be a problem for heavier sleepers and people who spend a lot of time sitting on the edge of their bed.” – Logan
Edge support is one of the weaker points of the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max.
Though it has a foam perimeter reinforcement, the Snow Hybrid rated as below average during our edge support testing. We found that the foam isn’t firm enough to keep the edges rigid when heavier weight is applied to it.
People who need added support to get in and out of bed might want to look for a mattress that is firmer or made with a springier material for more robust edge support.
The Snow Max sank more than the Snow Hybrid during our edge support tests. This can be attributed to the Max’s softer feel.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
Snow: 6.5 / 10
Snow Max: 6 / 10
“I didn’t feel totally stuck in place on the Snow Hybrid, but there’s not much springiness to help you move around in bed.” – Jackson
Our testers found that the Snow Hybrid didn’t promote easy movement, but it also didn’t cause major barriers to moving around.
Although the memory foam contours around the body, the pocketed coils create a firm base that keeps you from feeling like you’re stuck in quicksand. Our team found that movement was a bit tougher on the plusher Snow Max.
For most people, ease of movement isn’t a make-or-break category, but it may be a priority for people who frequently switch between sleeping positions during the night and want to be able to do so without any resistance from their mattress.
Off-Gassing
6.5
/ 10
Snow: 7 / 10
Snow Max: 6 / 10
“There’s a pretty strong smell when you first unbox the Snow Hybrid. I didn’t notice it after a few days, which is about par for the course for a hybrid mattress.” – Jeremy
Casper uses CertiPUR-US-certified foams that have low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels in the Snow Hybrid and Snow Max. However, when you set up these mattresses, you may notice a smell as they expand to their full size. The scent should dissipate within a few days to a week.
If you are sensitive to smells, we recommend unwrapping your mattress in a room with plenty of ventilation and waiting at least 24 hours before use.
The Casper Snow is a hybrid model that is 12 inches tall and rates as a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, giving it a medium feel. It has multiple internal layers and a number of additional features that target cooling and support.
The mattress cover is a smooth fabric that is infused with yarn that’s meant to pull excess heat away from the body. Inside the mattress, there’s a top layer of memory foam coated in phase change material, another approach to maintaining an even temperature. HeatDelete graphite bands embedded within this layer are engineered to further dissipate body heat.
The next memory foam layer is divided into three firmness zones to push back against the extra weight in your torso and hips without feeling too stiff elsewhere. The support core contains pocketed coils with a perimeter reinforced by dense foam. A thin polyfoam pad sits at the bottom to give the mattress additional stability.
The Snow Max includes all of these elements along with a third memory foam layer, which provides transitional support between the other foams and the support core. This layer is perforated with airflow channels. The total height of the Snow Max is 14 inches, and it has a firmness level of medium soft (4).
