Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ Mattress, we had three people on our testing team take the bed home and test it for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“I appreciate the extra cooling features the Evolution Comfort+ has. It’s not the coolest bed I’ve ever tried, but I think it’s totally worthwhile for all but the hottest sleepers.”

Head of Product Content
Combination

Sleeps with a noise machine
“Since I switch between sleeping positions, I need a bed that’s supportive no matter what. I thought the Comfort+ did a surprisingly good job. I expected it to be too firm because of its marketing, but I found it a really good fit.”
Brad Nehring
Senior Product Analyst
Side

Sleeps with a weighted blanket
“I think the Comfort+ is a little shy of hitting the mark for heavier sleepers. It’s certainly not a bad option, but I think it’s too compressive for anyone who’s significantly heavier than 230.”

Side Sleepers
The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ provides even contouring that’s a good fit for most side sleepers, especially those between 130 and 230 pounds. The zoned coil core has spinal support and side body cushioning — a combination that most side sleepers appreciate. Our testers under 130 pounds found the mattress’ firm (7) feel a bit too rigid, while those over 230 pounds would have liked more structure.
Back Sleepers
The Evolution Comfort+ Mattress’ combination of firm support and gentle cushioning are ideal for many back sleepers, particularly those between 130 and 230 pounds. The Euro-top cushions the body, while the AirFoam HD layer evenly distributes weight. The pocketed coil core’s middle section is zoned for extra lumbar support to prevent back pain and boost spinal alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
Because of its firm support and zoned core, the Evolution Comfort+ is a good match for stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. Its resilient polyfoam comfort system keeps stomach sleepers on top of the mattress and prevents their spines from sinking and curving.
The zoned pocketed coil support core is the second line of defense in preventing sinkage, with sturdier coils in the middle to help keep a stomach sleeper’s midsection and shoulders on an even plane. Our testers above and below the 130 to 230 pound weight group thought the bed was too firm and too soft, respectively.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
8
/ 10
“I don’t always have good luck with motion isolation on hybrids this firm, but I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t notice much movement while I tested this bed.” – Logan
It’s somewhat unusual for a hybrid to isolate motion this well, but the Evolution Comfort+ manages it with ease. The thick comfort system absorbs movement, so co-sleepers are less likely to wake up when their partner adjusts positions. The pocketed coil core also reduces surface vibrations, since each spring moves independently.
Pressure Relief
8
/ 10
“I think the Evolution Comfort+ is a good fit for anyone who wants pressure relief but not a lot of compression. The zoned support does the heavy lifting and prevents sore spots without letting you sink too much.” – Jeremy
The Evolution Comfort+ offers solid pressure relief. Its Euro-top gently cushions, while the AirFoam layer redistributes weight to alleviate tension. The pocketed coil core also reduces pressure buildup because its zones give you more pushback where you need it and extra cushioning where you don’t.
That said, our side sleeping testers under 130 pounds said they didn’t weigh enough to get significant pressure relief from this bed.
Temperature Control
7.5
/ 10
“This bed isn’t the coolest hybrid we’ve tested, but it didn’t retain too much heat either. Its construction and extra cooling features work as advertised.” – Colin
Our testers were impressed with the mattress’ solid temperature control. The airy cotton cover has thermally conductive fibers designed to dissipate heat, and the gusseted Euro-top ventilates the comfort system.
While some types of foam are prone to heat retention, AirFoam is designed for breathability, so it doesn’t trap as much heat as close-conforming memory foam. The pocketed coil support core also has plenty of gaps to disperse heat.
Edge Support
9
/ 10
“There’s an impressive amount of edge support at the sides of this bed. If you have mobility limitations, you may want to give it a try.” – Mary
We didn’t notice much compression when sitting or lying along the sides of the Evolution Comfort+. Responsive foam comfort layers minimize sinkage, while a reinforced perimeter boosts edge support. Co-sleepers should be able to spread out on the mattress and feel consistent support.
Ease of Movement
7
/ 10
“This bed has a blend of bounce and motion isolation, which is a tricky balance to get right. Because of the foam, it’s not super responsive, but the coil core keeps you from feeling like you’re ‘in’ the bed.” – Jackson
As a mattress designed for heavier people, the Evolution Comfort+ resists sagging and regains its shape quickly when sleepers move, preventing deep impressions that could otherwise feel confining. The springy pocketed coil core also facilitates movement, while a sturdy perimeter makes getting in and out of bed easier. However, those looking for an exceptionally bouncy bed may want a latex hybrid instead.
Off-Gassing
7.5
/ 10
“The Evolution Comfort+ has the off-gassing level I’d expect from the amount of foam it contains. It’s noticeable but not overpowering.” – Brad
You might notice some off-gassing odors when you unbox the Evolution Comfort+ Mattress, which is typical of models containing foam. The smell occurs when synthetic foams release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As these tiny particles dissipate, so does the odor.
If you’re sensitive to smells, you can let the mattress air out in a well-ventilated room. Most odors should disappear within 48 hours of unboxing.
The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ is a 14-inch hybrid mattress that rates as firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale.
The organic cotton cover fabric incorporates ArcticTex fibers that are engineered to dissipate heat. There are 2 inches of polyfoam stitched into the cover to give it a plush, cushioning surface. Air flows well through the Euro-top’s ventilation gusset.
The next layer uses 2 inches of AirFoam, a proprietary polyfoam formulated to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. An additional polyfoam layer promotes spinal alignment by evenly distributing body weight and resisting sagging.
The support core features 8 inches of pocketed coils. They’re built to support extra weight and are arranged in three zones for targeted support. The center is firmer to bolster the lumbar area, while the top and bottom zones give your shoulders and legs more cushioning.
A reinforced perimeter increases edge support, which is helpful if you sit or sleep near the sides of the bed. A layer of recycled plant fibers stabilizes the mattress, and a non-skid fabric base helps prevent it from shifting.
