The Plank Firm Luxe is a reversible hybrid with an exceptionally firm feel on each side. This ultra-supportive build is ideal for many people who weigh more than 230 pounds – back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Pros
Flippable design offers two firmness options
Built for people who love the feel of a firm mattress
Strong edge support and temperature regulation
Cons
Too firm for many side sleepers and people under 130 pounds
The Plank Firm Luxe is one of the firmest mattresses on the market. This flippable model has a firm (7) side and an extra firm (9) side, allowing sleepers flexibility in the feel of their mattress.
Each side includes a quilted top layer and adaptive polyfoam built around a core of pocketed innerspring coils. Because of its firmness, the Plank Firm Luxe is a good fit for back and stomach sleepers and people who prefer to sleep on top of their mattress instead of sinking into it.
We asked our expert testing team to fully analyze the performance of the Plank Firm Luxe in our Test Lab. We go over what they found and provide more details about the pricing, sizing, and construction of the Plank Firm Luxe.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Plank Firm Luxe Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.
Jeremy Klein
Senior Product Testing Manager
Side sleeper
160 lbs.
Nightly melatonin user
Overall, the Plank Firm Luxe is firmer than what I typically prefer. The firm side had just enough cradling for my hips and shoulders, but the extra firm side felt way too hard.
Brad Nehring
Senior Product Analyst
Side sleeper
215 lbs.
Sleeps with a weighted blanket
I’m a side sleeper like Jeremy, and I also tend to be most comfortable on a mattress with more cushioning. But I did like that I could sleep cool on the Plank Firm Luxe, especially with the optional cooling cover.
Mary Fenton
Head of Product Content
Combo sleeper
150 lbs.
Sleeps with a noise machine
As someone who spends quite a bit of time sleeping on my back and stomach, I felt really comfortable on the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe. It doesn’t have a lot of cushioning, but it was enough for me.

Side Sleepers
Many side sleepers in our testing said that the Plank Firm Luxe was too firm and lacked cushioning for high-pressure areas like the hips and shoulders.
Side sleepers are typically most comfortable on a mattress that contours to their heavier joints, gently cradling the body into a posture with proper spinal alignment.
During our tests, virtually all side sleepers said the extra firm (9) side was too hard. Some side sleepers over 130 pounds found that the firm (7) side provided adequate support for their joints even if it wasn’t their ideal level of firmness.
Back Sleepers
In our testing, back sleepers were big fans of the Plank Firm Luxe. Back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds tended to prefer the firm (7) side, while those over 230 pounds liked the extra firm (9) side more.
Back sleepers need an even sleep surface to keep their spine in a neutral position, but they also benefit from a small amount of cushioning, especially for their lower back.
Our testing showed that the Plank Firm Luxe can meet these needs for back sleepers. People with a higher body weight appreciated the added stability on the extra firm (9) side, and those under 230 pounds liked the additional cushioning on the firm (7) side.
Stomach Sleepers
Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers gave high ratings to the Plank Firm Luxe during our testing. The extra firm (9) side was most popular among stomach sleepers over 230 pounds, and the firm (7) side won the day among those under 230 pounds.
Stomach sleepers often experience a sore neck and back when sleeping on a mattress that is too soft. Without a sturdy mattress surface, their abdomen can sink down and draw their body into a U-shape.
We found that both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe can give stomach sleepers the even sleep surface that they need.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6
/ 10
Firm Side: 7 / 10
Extra Firm Side: 6 / 10
“There’s no doubt that vibration carries across the surface of the Plank Firm Luxe. I don’t think it will bother everyone, but it’s a drawback for light sleepers.” – Mary
The Plank Firm Luxe has lower ratings for motion isolation than most hybrid mattresses.
Because of its firmness and bouncy coils, the Plank Firm Luxe has limited ability to absorb motion that happens when there’s movement on another part of the mattress. With less cushioning, the extra firm (9) side tends to permit more motion transfer.
Couples who are worried about sleep disruptions from movement may prefer a mattress with foam materials that better absorb vibrations.
Pressure Relief
6
/ 10
Firm Side: 7 / 10
Extra Firm Side: 5 / 10
“This mattress isn’t designed to optimize pressure relief, but it still holds appeal for people who hate the sense of sinking into their mattress.” – Jeremy
A lack of pressure relief is one of the main drawbacks of the Plank Firm Luxe Mattress. The firm (7) side has limited ability to cradle the joints, and the extra firm (9) side offers even less cushioning.
That said, this mattress isn’t built to hug sleepers and provide a cloud-like feel. Instead, it is meant precisely for people who need or prefer a harder sleep surface. Based on our testing, the mattress appeals most to back and stomach sleepers.
Temperature Control
8
/ 10
Firm Side: 7.5 / 10
Extra Firm Side: 8.5 / 10
“One of my favorite things about this mattress was that it didn’t retain much heat. That’s a real benefit that comes from the fact that you don’t get hugged by the foam layers.” – Brad
We found that the Plank Firm Luxe has an above-average ability to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Virtually no sleepers in our testing complained of overheating, especially when using the extra firm (9) side. Since sleepers don’t sink into the mattress, there’s plenty of room for airflow around the skin, which helps the body naturally regulate its temperature.
For hot sleepers who want extra cooling features, the optional cooling cover can make it even easier to avoid waking up in a sweat.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
Firm Side: 8 / 10
Extra Firm Side: 8.5 / 10
“If you want edge support, this mattress is right up your alley. Both sides have a robust and dependable edge.” – Jeremy
Because of its firmness, the Plank Firm Luxe has excellent edge support. The extra firm (9) side of the mattress is particularly supportive around the perimeter, but both sides allow you to comfortably sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Strong edge support also makes getting in and out of bed easier.
Ease of Movement
8
/ 10
Firm Side: 7.5 / 10
Extra Firm Side: 8 / 10
“I switch between different sleeping positions during the night, and I had no problems on the Plank Firm Luxe. I always felt on top of the mattress as opposed to sagging down into it.” – Mary
Our testers had very few problems when they wanted to move around on the surface of the Plank Firm Luxe. The firmness level means that you don’t sink into the mattress, so there’s little resistance when you want to adjust your body’s positioning. The bounce of the coils also contributes to the high marks for ease of movement for the Plank Firm Luxe.
Off-Gassing
7
/ 10
“There’s a smell when you open up the Plank Firm Luxe, but it’s similar to what you can expect from most hybrids. It should be gone within a few days at most.” – Brad
The Plank Firm Luxe has a “new mattress smell” that is comparable to most other hybrid mattresses.
Mattresses with foam layers produce some off-gassing due to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from manufacturing. These compounds are generally harmless but can have an unpleasant chemical smell.
Despite this, the Plank Firm Luxe should air out quickly. If you’re sensitive to smells, plan to give your mattress between 24 to 72 hours for the odor to dissipate. You can turn on a fan or open a window to get rid of the odor more quickly.
The Plank Firm Luxe is 13.25 inches tall, and it has a reversible design, which means it can be used on either side. One side is formulated to be firm (7), and the other is extra firm (9).
The firm (7) side of the Plank Firm Luxe starts with a 1.5-inch quilted fabric cover. Beneath that is 1 inch of responsive polyfoam and 2 inches of high-density support polyfoam. These layers offer light cushioning with little to no hug.
The extra firm (9) side has a similar construction, but its comfort system is thinner. It starts with a .75-inch quilted cover and 2 inches of high-density support foam. With fewer foam layers and a thinner quilted top, the extra firm side has more pushback and less cushioning. As a result, the extra firm side provides little body contouring and excellent edge support.
The core of the mattress is a 6-inch layer of individually wrapped coils. These coils give the Plank Firm Luxe a bouncy, responsive feel. They also strengthen the overall stability and edge support on both sides.
As an optional add-on, you can include a GlacioTex cooling cover on both sides of the mattress. This cover is designed to wick away moisture and prevent the mattress from building up heat while you sleep.
